Outliers

Outliers Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell
Published by: Little, Brown
Release date: November 11, 2008

rating: 5 of 5 stars

From the author of The Tipping Point and Blink, comes a fascinating look into why some people succeed and some do not. Malcolm Gladwell convincingly argues that there is so much more to success than the "rags-to-riches through sheer determination" cliche we often buy into. Instead, he looks at how our culture, language, ancestors, birth date, and sheer luck play into the equation.

Want to know answers to questions like:

Why are Asians good at math?
Are geniuses more successful?
What's wrong with our school system?
What do plane crashes have to do with ethnicity?
How does where we live affect who we are?
How hard do you have to work to be good at something?

READ THIS BOOK!

I thought this was completely engrossing from start to finish and it is definitely one of my favorites this year. Highly recommended.

Thank you Kelly from Hachette for this awesome book!

I loved his other books. I'll have to put this on my "too read" list. Thanks!

I liked The Tipping Point although I am not an Outlier or any of those other world-changing people he describes. darn. He should write a book about The Average Joe and the Everyday Jane.

Bookbliss: I think the thing that I found interesting about this book is that Gladwell kind of argues that these world-changing people are much more Average Joes than we would expect. In fact, he argues we should probably look at "success" differently as a culture. This book definitely made me realize that giving my kids certain opportunities in life and how I talk to them, and how we approach their schooling all have an impact on who they will become. I would still give it a shot!
